The Right Bus

In his book Good to Great, Jim Collins writes that great organizations get the “right people” in the “right seats” on the “right bus.”

That Thing is a sr. high student conference expanding God’s Kingdom here on earth by reaching churched students. This is not an evangelism event. It is a program that helps students understand the value of and become missional people who live like Christ, fight injustice, resist faith-apathy and bring hope and love to a world in need.

People on the right bus here at That Thing tend to understand that the world is deeply in need of healing and restoration though Jesus Christ; that the body of Christ has more to offer than we so often give; and that together, primally living like Christ, we are the answer carrying His hope and love. The vision given us is bold, we know it is of God and so we trust and are committed to it; we are growing towards a vision of 10,000 people every year.

The Right People

Authentic Christ Follower: Ultimately the positions here are meant to create the community and experiences that will transform these students lives for Jesus Christ. You must not only love God, you must love God’s people, and you must also love God’s Word and know how to live it.
A Producer: The people who will fit perfectly are passionately desiring to further the Kingdom of God, never satisfied putting forth a single iota less than their absolute best and always find a way to get it done.
Quick Study & Adaptable: Serving in these roles requires being able to easily pick up new processes and tasks quickly. Ministry in a camp-style setting requires adaptability and flexibility in positions that switch gears/focus from one minute to the next.
Aptitude for the Position: We’ve learned that sometimes the right people don’t always arrive with the skill set in place; they do however have an inherent potential for the position. (A person with no training in live audio but an excellent musicians ear may end up as a Sound Engineer. No leadership experience but the perfect outgoing and engaging personality may make a great Fun Engineer)

Internship Positions

We offer internships working alongside our full time development staff. You can learn how we develop worship services, write curriculum, create the spiritual journey, plan activities, events and games, and be a part of running the summer. Being a That Thing intern requires a somewhat similar attitude to that of being on a missionary trip...only, the land isn't quite so foreign and the prep time lasts a whole lot longer. Our goal for running internships is to raise up the next generation of leaders in the body of Christ and to connect people and their passions/skills into ministry with senior high students.

Develop and improve skills in leadership, event planning, production, video, photography, creative writing, worship design and so much more. Your time here can help you develop hands on experience that will help give you an edge after college.

Spiritual Development - worship, curriculum, etc. (perfect for youth ministry, christian ed, and biblical studies majors)
Auditorium Production - technical development (perfect for worship leadership, theater, and live sound/video majors)
Creative Arts - worship elements, stage design, etc. (perfect for youth ministry, worship leadership, art, and theater majors)
Communications-Video Production (perfect for telecommunications and digital media majors)
Communications - online (perfect for journalism, web design and digital media majors)
Activities - running events, group games etc. (perfect for sports/rec management and youth ministry majors)

Summer Program and Operations Team

It takes a large team to make the summers happen here at Epworth Forest Conference Center. Being a part of this team is being a major part of the hands and feet of ministry. Our internship positions roll over into some of the summer staff positions as they switch from development into application.

Our staff assist in running not just That Thing, but in making two other camp experiences happen; REYOAD is a camp for special needs adults and Royal Family Kids Camp is a camp for at-risk students.
